Jim's Blog

Hello and welcome to my blog. This blog will be used primarily (or rather ONLY) for posting research and work I've done for I-media. So yeah...knock yourself out.

Possible Artists influences and project direction (so far).

A couple of artists I have looked at:

Joseph Turner
Claude Lorrain

The painting here that really attracts me is the 'Rain, Steam and Speed' painting (this is the image just above with the train). I like how the colours blend together as it really does give the impression of 'Rain , Steam and Speed'.

One other reason to why this particular painting caught my eye is because I would hopefully like my work to be influenced by this particular style. I will practice with Watercolours to see what the effects I achieve are. However, whether my experiment will be successful is another story.

If I am unable to create successful watercolour backgrounds for my project I will try to have a blend of stock images along with my own. Although my background does not necessarily have to be in a 'Watercolour' style as this is just my desired goal. I can as mentioned use other resources such as pen etc etc.

In order to incorporate the Kopparberg drink as a product into my advert I will take a video of it. I will  take videos of Kopparberg Cider from all different angles e.g. moving the camera around the bottle (capturing the logo) and/or having someone drink from the bottle.

If you look at a previous post with the Kopparberg advert you can see it was shot in a particular way. Although looking at the bottle itself you can see all the water droplets etcs

Asian Drinks and advertisements.

One area of drink choice I wanted to touch upon was Asian drinks as this is something I have considered looking at. Although when I say Asian I should be more specific and say Japanese drinks as these are what interest me more so than other Asian beverages.

Japanese drinks I've I know about consist of:

Japanese Beer

Sake

Tamagozake

Happoshu

There are more of course but these seem to be the more well known types of Japanese drinks.

Researching Japanese drink adverts is almost a big waste of time. Their adverts are not only nothing to do with the 'Handmade' brief but are themselves completely ridiculous. The adverts I have managed to find have very silly humour but this is likely what is needed to cater to the japanese audience.

Unfortunately there isn't really anyway I could possibly incorporate any of this into my work.

Kopparberg ads and influences.

Looking at various bits and pieces on Youtube about Kopparberg can really help spur some ideas and help me decide on what route to take with my animation for Kopparberg.

The above video post is an advert for Kopparberg. I quite like the idea of having a close up shot of the drink itself and am thinking of incorporating similar elements into my ad and seeing how this works.

Although with drink adverts this type of ad is seen very often (a close up shot of a refreshing drink in ice cubes etc etc) but it's quite effective in my opinion as it certainly has the potential to make ones mouth water. A particular effect I noticed was the 'chilled' effect the water drop gave the drink on the bottle.

This second video incorporates a consistant animation style but applies it's own style at the same time to the individual flavours of the drink. The colours and art style give it a really natural wildlife type feel and are visually it is very pleasing in my opinion. Also great use of sound for the ads. This is another influence that could make it's way into my animation. By this I mean the watercolour type art style these animations have.

I could include something similar in the background with using masks in certain areas or something along those lines.

Looking further into Kopparberg Cider.

Although I am looking at Asian drinks and how they're advertised, my main drink choice and one I will most likely stick with is Kopparberg Cider. There are various different flavours for Kopparberg so I will choose one of those flavours and build my animation and style around that flavour.

So for example if I pick pear Cider I will have trees in my animation and Pears with maybe a green colour scheme going.

However, since Kopparberg 'Pear' Cider has different flavours I will use one of these other flavours as my animation theme. The Kopparberg flavours consist of:

Pear
Mixed Fruit
Strawberry and Lime
Elderflower and Lime
Apple

The flavours in which I'd like to look or rather develop ideas for are Apple, Mixed Fruit, Strawberry and Lime.

Drink choices.

There are plenty of drinks to choose from for this project. However I will likely choose a drink type that related more to nature (or focuses on natural ingredients). For example Cider. This is one of my primary choices as a lot of them, especially in the adverts you see nowadays tend to promote natural ingredients with mainly the use of Pears or Apples etc.

This advert is for Magners Cider and in my opinion is quite entertaining. It promotes the product by saying that only perfect natural ingredients (Apples, Pears etc etc) are used when making the drink. However the advert is very fun and has a slight comical effect to it.

Then there is beer which is also a relatively easy but not something that interests me for this project. Another area I wish to look into is Asian alcoholic drinks.

This is an advert for an Asian drink but as you can see it is clearly aimed at their particular market. I don't think an advert like this has ever been seen on British or American TV for that matter. Of course if I was to focus on some Asian drink my advert would look or be nothing like the one shown above.

'Handmade'.

The brief clearly states that the style of the work we produce has to be 'Handmade'. This pretty much means that the objects seen on screen in our final pieces have to have originated from ourselves or rather physical objects.

In order to do this one must scan in and digitize objects with textures. Now these objects can be anything we want them to be for example cardboard or a painted pattern. We can then apply these scanned objects to After Effects and make them a pattern or brush to be used.

Commencing a new project 'Handmade'.

In our new brief named 'Handmade' we have been asked to create a 30 second advert in Adobe After Effects for an alcoholic beverage of our choice.

Apart from making a 30 second ad we must also make two static adverts one for a bilboard and one for a magazine. Both have to be placed in using Photoshop since the Bilboard and magazine are actual images (I wasn't just referring to the size of the piece).

However this is just the practical. There will be a first deadline for animatic and in terms of submitting work we must have also as usual a Sketchbook and blog done.
